Mastering the Art of Sinus Care: A Step-by-Step Guide to Using a Neti Pot

A neti pot is a small, handheld vessel that uses water to flush out nasal passages with the help of gravity. The water loosens mucus and carries away allergens, bacteria, and dust from your sinuses. Using one can help relieve symptoms of chronic allergies, sinus issues, congestion, and colds. You may find it particularly beneficial during seasonal transitions or after working in the garden.

Nasal cleansing is a practice that has been around for over 5,000 years in Ayurvedic medicine. Let’s explore the proper method for irrigating our sinuses, step-by-step!

Step-by-Step Guide: 1. The Preparation – Find A Neti Pot & Distilled Water

First, you'll need to acquire a neti pot. You may have a plastic one, hiding since your doctor suggested it last cold season. Look amongst your artisanal soaps and first aid kit.  If you have a ceramic B. Swell neti pot, it is likely on your counter and you already know what to do.

Next, you'll need water. It's absolutely crucial that you use distilled water, or water that has been previously boiled for several minutes, then cooled to room temperature. Never use water straight from the tap! It can contain impurities that are not agreeable for this delicate process.

Ensure you have a comfortable space near a bathroom sink and tissues at the ready.

2. The Solution – to Saline or not

Plain distilled water will do the trick, but a saline solution can help get stubborn mucus moving. Preparing a cleansing saline solution is optional. Suggested recipe, if you want to give it a whirl:Add ¼ - ½ teaspoon of fine-grain, non-iodized salt to 6-8 oz of distilled water in your neti pot. Stir gently until every crystal is dissolved. The solution should be clear and feel soothing to the touch. Aim for a saline solution that is gentle and mimics the body's natural environment. Start by using a low ratio of salt, then adjust to your personal comfort level over time.

3. The Position - Gracefully Inclined

Standing in front of your sink, gently tilt your head to one side, ensuring one nostril is positioned higher than the other.  Open your mouth slightly, as this helps with breathing during the process. This is important unless you fancy a sudden, unwelcome gulp of salty water.4: The Pour - A gentle Stream

4: The Pour - A gentle Stream

Carefully insert the spout of your neti pot into the elevated nostril. It should create a comfortable seal.Slowly and steadily, begin to pour the water into the nostril. The water will naturally flow through your sinuses and out the lower nostril. It's quite fascinating to observe and feel!

5. The Drainage - Allowing the Flow

Allow the entire contents of the neti pot to flow through one nostril. Once finished, gently remove the spout and allow any remaining solution to drain from your nostril. You can gently blow your nose, but avoid forceful blowing, as this can be a bit…gross.

6. The Repeat - Balancing the equation

Now, repeat the process on the other nostril to balance the cleansing of both sinuses. Refill the neti pot. Tilt your head in the opposite direction and gently pour the water into the upper nostril, allowing it to drain out the other nostril.

Again, breathe through your open mouth and gently blow and wipe your nose. Bizarre how that works, right?

7. The Rinse - Ensuring Cleanliness

Once you've completed both sides, handwash your neti pot with mild soap. Allow it to air dry completely. Perhaps perch it near the sink as a testament to your newfound nasal clarity, at the ready for use in your wellness routine. And there you have it.

A simple yet remarkably effective way to cleanse and refresh your nasal passages. You might find it a bit unusual at first, but with a little practice, it becomes quite a soothing ritual. Let us know how it goes!
